Installing htop

On Debian box you can simply write following line to install htop

apt-get install htop

If you would like to compile htop from source code first download source code from http://sourceforge.net/projects/htop/  and follow next step:

tar zxvf htop-1.0.1.tar.gz
cd htop-1.0.1
./configure
make
make install

Create new archive - compress

On the Linux system is very easy to compress the whole folder. We will use tar command with four arguments:

-z => compress archive with gzip

-c => create an archive

-v => verbose, which means to display progress

-f => filename of the archive

Example:

tar -zcvf name_of_archive.tar.gz /folder/path/to/dempress

Decompress our new archive

We created tar.gz archive now. Next step is to uncompress it. We can do this with the use of:

tar -zxvf name_of_archive.tar.gz /folder/to/decompress

where -x means => extract files
